Installation
It is essential that the pavement design, materials selected and construction practise are integrated in order to achieve the desired pavement quality and function. Successful installation depends upon many factors, including compliance to a detailed quality specification and the use of appropriate materials, plant and equipment.

A block paved area should be able to accommodate te intended trafficking over its design life, without experiencing significant surface deformation. In order to achieve thus he paving must be correctly designed and properly installed.

Successful installation if concrete block paving depends on three main operations:

  • Preparation
  • Detailing
  • Compaction

If the underlying sub-layers below the block paving surface are correctly designed and prepared, within acceptable parameters, then the pavement will have a good foundation and be able to support the applied loads.

Close attention to detailing will ensure an aesthetically acceptable block surface able to protect the sub-layer and transmit the applied loads to the structural elements of the sub-layer.

Good compaction of each layer of the block paving will prevent the formation of ruts through out its life by maintaining the structural integrity of the surface course, and protection the sub-layers and subgrade from becoming over-stressed.

The main elements of a block paved paving construction are shown in the paving cross-section below. The roadbase and capping layers are dependant on the level of trafficking and ground strength and may not be required in all applications.
